Well, it is now that time of year when school has finished and everyone is preparing for christmas. We have had our last 3 assembly's and it was wonderful to see room ten pupils ackniwledged for all their outstanding achievements in Te Reo (Maori), english, the arts, science, cooking, hard materials and many more. I would like to say that it has been a wonderful year with all of the students from Room Ten MIS and I look forward to hearing of all your successes in the coming year. Have a wonderful break and remember......

Roller Coaster Sharing

Room 3, 6, and 10 have been making Roller Coasters for about 7 weeks now. We held a sharing time today under our dome, this was a great chance for everyone to show off their designs and their tracks. We also judged the Roller Coasters and came up with 3 that really stood out....

This team was the overall winner as their Roller Coaster had height, gravity, variables in loops and different uses of all the elements. It was fast and really was an exciting run. Well done Boys from Room 3.

This Team won the prize for the most stable and well built frame as well as a neat track. Well done Girls from Room 3.

This Team won the prize for the most compact and busy track that had a number of interesting jumps and turns. Well done Girls from Room 10.

All 3 classes worked extremely hard on their Roller Coasters and all deserve a big congratulations.

Room 6 Had an outstanding Roller Coaster that had a crocodile mouth and some amazing original designs, unfortunately it was ruined.

ROLLER COASTER PROJECTS
In Room 10 we are making roller coasters. After we make our roller coasters we will make roller coaster posters. They are posters that have heaps of information on roller coasters. Here are some of the finished or near finishing their roller coaster projects. The information we needed to find out was: all the forces, first roller coaster in NZ, Who invented the roller coaster, what is the fastest roller coaster and how much does it cost to ride. The last thing we needed to do was design a new roller coaster with a theme. The first poster is about Phineas and Ferb. The middle poster is called the Wotwots rollercoaster. We found out the fastest roller coaster is the Kingda Ka (206 km/hr) from New Jersey and it costs $50 to get into the theme park and children are $30. We have all put in a lot of effect into these posters.

Rainbows End Review...

My favourite thing was the Fear Fall because of the feeling going out of my comfort zone and the roller coaster. At the end of the roller coaster I got a headache from hitting my head on the safety belts that went over me. The log flume was fun but it went very slowly, but at the start of the tunnel it went fast and the slide went really fast and you got a picture at the slide on the end of the log flume.The power surge was cool it looked like I was going to hit the pole when I came up and went around and when I went upside down I felt like I was going to fall out and some people had money falling out of their pocket. At the end of the day, I had a lot of fun.

Social Dancing

Every Year Morrinsville Intermediate has Social Dancing. We learn dances like the Cha Cha Slide and the Foxtrot.
We practice hard twice a week for about 4 weeks until the Year 8 social. The Year Sevens practice as well as it is good for them to start learning the moves a year ahead ... to keep them on their toes (so to speak!)
The Year 8 Social is a lovely opportunity to celebrate the end of year 8 and the exciting journey of College ahead.

Aroha's Quilt

This year we have already showen Megan and Nicole's quilts ... Now it is Aroha's turn. Aroha has been working hard on her design. She is planning to add beads to some of the Koru designs to represent her whanau (family). We all look forward to the final quilt.... well done Aroha!

Roller coasters - Almost all done

We have been trying hard to complete all our roller coasters before our trip to Rainbows End on Monday the 23rd November. We are working together well and solving problems as they occur. It has been very difficult to keep our roller coasters safe and we have had one or two semi squashed which is very frustrating. We have had to reinforce columns and stabalise with diagonal supports.

What can we learn from Picture Books?

Room Ten has been looking into picture books. We have looked at sophisticated picture books, books with a message, picture books with no words. Today we worked in the Library with Mrs LeHeron and she asked us to look at picture books and decide how small children could learn from the content. Danielle.S read Windows by Jeannie Baker (it has no words) and decided it would be great for children to learn that things change in life.

Shenae read Hubert Horatio Bartle Bobton by Trent Lauren Child. She decided this would be good to help teach:

how to be well mannered
how to have a good attitude
how not to be snobby

Room 10, 3, and 6 are very excited to be heading off to Rainbows End in 5 days time. We have been building our own paper rollercoasters and learning all about the forces behind them. It will be a great opportunity to start celebrating the end of year as a team and put all our knowledge about roller coasters into reality by looking and feeling the physics behind roller coasters.

Tyla, Shenae, Jade and Bonnie have worked very hard on their Roller Coaster and have 2 tracks leading down to the checkered flag at the bottom. Shenae's favourite part is the funnel because the marble just spins around for ages. Jades favourite part is the spiral and likes how fast it goes around. Bonnie likes the loop because of all the stored potential energy that has been turned into kinetic energy makes the marble not fall out when it goes upside down. Tyla enjoyed the making process and deciding where everything went and is quite proud of her chectered finish flag.

During our roller coaster unit some of the students have been very creative with their ideas and roller coaster design. Here is Leo, Matenga, Grant and Hax's creative jump ending. It took them 4 tries to place the box in the right place..... it looks great!

Piako Cultrual Festival

Yesterday we had the Piako Cultural Festival. It involved kapahaka (Maori performance group) groups from these schools Tatuanui, Tahuna, Morrinsville Primary, David st, Motumaoho, Tauhei, Kiwitahi, Learning Curves, Morrinsville College, and our school Morrinsville Intermediate. It was a long day in the sun. We all enjoyed watching different schools perform. Our performance was at 1:40 . We performed a warm up wiata (Maori Song), 6 other wiata and 1 haka (Maori war dance - men only). We performed our best and were pretty good. It was nerve racking standing in front of lots of people, but after awhile I got use to it. The piako Cultrual Festival was really cool.

Livestock day was held today at Morrinsville Intermediate School. This is an annual event where students are able to bring in their pets (dogs, cats, turtles bunnies etc), livestock (calves, goats, sheep), and craft items. All are judged by outside school judges and prizes are awarded. If students did not bring in an animal they competed in games while the others were showing their pets and livestock.

This was a great day held by all and many great accomplishments!

These are all examples of possible impacts that might affect us and our environment because of climate change...

But why would this happen?

Average global temperature has increased by almost 1ºF over the past century; scientists expect the average global temperature to increase an additional 2 to 6ºF over the next one hundred years.

What's the big deal???

One degree Fahrenheit over one hundred years, that’s not a lot!
Or is it???

This may not sound like much, but it could change the Earth's climate as never before...In fact at the peak of the last ice age the temperature was only 7ºF colder than it is today and glaciers covered much of North America!

What is the cause of all this temperature change though?

Pollution, such as gases from cars and fumes from big industries is one of the big problems.Another is when we burn coals, oil or gas for our electricity this creates Co2, a gas that creates global warming...

In fact 1000 tonnes of co2 gas every 23.5 seconds is the current rate for the country of India alone. That is an increase in the past 2 years.

One person dies every 4.3 seconds in this poverty filled land, and sadly the poor will be the ones most affected by global warming.

Morrinsville intermediate are going to perform a musical on “rat bags’

It is about a gang of rats who are taking over a town, the townies want the mayor to do something about it but when she does, she doesn’t give a reward...!

We all have a busy schedule of practices we are so dedicated we are practicing in the holidays!!!

The Production will take place in the first week of November. It will be really tiring and stressful!

At the moment it is looking so cool and everyone on the cast and the teachers can’t wait until we perform the production!

South Africa were unstoppable this tri nations, except for one game when the Australians managed to work around the skill of the South Africans.
Throughout the Tri Nations the All Blacks have improved greatly. Because when they played the first game against the Australians They won 22-16. In the last game the All Blacks had improved a lot and smashed the Australians 33-6.
Biggest upset
The most upsetting part of the Tri Nations was when the South Africans lost to Australia. The score was 21-6.

Last night, Thursday the 17th of September Tainui had a disco, their theme was Fluoro.

There were glow sticks and necklaces to buy.

We got to pick the music and we had to leave a comment on room 4’s blog to let Mr Casey know what songs we wanted. We also had to bring the music to school and if we didn’t we had to listen to Mrs McDonald’s Music!!!

6 people had to get up on the stage to dance, they were Shannon, Maddison, Caitlin, Sam and a few others, people were giving prizes for best dressed and dancing.

Everyone had a great time and sung along to the songs that were played.

Paper Roller Coaster Update

Roller coasters have been such a great time. We are enjoying making the different parts to our roller coaster and we should be ready to put the frame up next week. It will be exciting to begin setting up our actual roller coaster at the start of term 4. Making all of the parts of the roller coaster has been fun but also hard because we need to be very careful that wel cut, fold, and score (rule over the libes with ball point pen to make the folds sharp and strong) the paper correctly.

T.G.F.U is Cricket this term. Room Ten is well under way with their new skills. We have looked at bowling (Revised our throwing and catching skills), and now we are focussing on our batting. When we are batting we are looking at how we hold the bat, our position to the bowler, and the batting action and follow through. Fun times!, it is especialy nice as it is a lot warmer now and the afternoons are perfect for practice.

Numeracy in Action

Todays groups looked at 7 lots of 38 and how we could work it out. They decided it was easiest to have 3 lots of 10 and 2 lots of 4 in each column. That made it easier to work out 21 x 10 = 210 and then 4 x 14 = 56. It was easy after that as 56 + 210 = 265as the answer. We then talked about 38 being close to 40 so 40 x 7 = 280 and because we added 7 lots of 2 we took off 14 from 280 which gave us 265 as well. Our last strategy was to look at 7 x 30 which is 210 and then times the remainder 8 by 7 which is 56 and add 56 onto 210 also giving us 265. Phew ..... that was heaps of strategies in one lesson but it really does make it a lot quicker to answer things in our heads (imaging). OUR LEARNING INTENTION WAS: I AM LEARNING TO SOLVE MULTIPLICATION PROBLEMS BY USING A VARIETY OF MENTAL STRATEGIES.

The Numeracy Project is focused on developing children's understanding of numbers, and their ability to use numbers to solve problems. Children may solve number problems by counting, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, or combinations of these.
As part of the Numeracy Project children should be learning to:
* enjoy working with numbers
* make sense of numbers - how big they are, how they relate to other numbers, and how they behave
* solve mathematical problems - whether real life or imaginary
* calculate in their heads whenever possible, rather than using a calculator or pen and paper
* show that they understand maths, using equipment, diagrams and pictures
* explain and record the methods they use to work out problems
* accept challenges and work at levels that stretch them
* work with others and by themselves
* discuss how they tackle mathematical problems - with other students, their teacher and you!

This information is fom the NZ Maths site run by the NZ Ministry of education.

In Room Ten each group has their own book where they write their learning intention, plan, 'work out', and solve equations showing a process. These books can be used by the students at any stage to revisit work or for new problems. Everyone gets a turn to write and they are able to sign their work and take ownership of problems solved. A lot of the numeracy work is with materials aiming towards 'imaging' which is to work problems out in their head using one or more strategies. The workbook for the groups is primarily a place to share new strategies.

Kinetic and Potential energy

In order for us to begin learning about roller coasters we need to understand the basics of physics. Potential and kinetic energy are hugely important in the success of roller coasters. Room ten participated in an activity involving marbles and different heights - looking at the relationship between potential and kinetic energy. Potential energy is when someting is not moving but is storing its (potential) energy. Nicoles Quilt

In fabric extension, I worked on a quilt of my horse 'Faith'. I started off slow and not really knowing what to do next. In the last few weeks I really worked hard. First I got a blown up picture of Faith and traced pattern pieces onto tracing paper and then onto visor fix, which is a special paper that glues to the fabric. The fabric got cut out and then put together on the background I had chosen. I then had to choose a back pattern and put padding in between them to make it thick and cushiony. Next was the sewing machine! We got black fur for the mane which really made the horse come to life. After sewing everything together Mrs Dainty bound it which means she sewed the border on. After the holidays I got so exited coming back to school because I knew I would see my quilt. I loved it so much!
I am really proud of my quilt and so is my family. Now Faith will be with us forever. By Nicole

Megan is part of an extension group working with fabric in the material technology classroom. She has begun making a quilt with a beautiful Maori design. Megan is weaving the green material behind the main design. There is still a lot to do to her quilt as she had not begun sewing yet but is preparing the design and material until she is completely happy. Megan is already planning her next quilt design and knows it will have more blue fabric. The materials teacher has given Megan a lot of great advice and guidance so far in this process and we are all looking forward to the finished quilt.

Today ‘My Tag My Town’ came to our school to talk about how to look after the community and how to help the community. They also talked about tagging which is our unit of inquiry. We can do to help out and some of our ideas were:

We shared our ideas with them on what Pat who was the host told us how we should try look after the community; he also said how he helped the old lady by walking her dog every morning and shaved off his hair for cancer. Rexine gave out prizes like CD cases and books from paper plus. Pat is on the radio and TV. Room10 were happy that My Tag My Town came to our school it will help with our Unit or Inquiry. Room Ten talks about their success

The day had come.... Inter Intermediate x-country was here.
The race was at Porret Stadium which is in Hamilton. We hadn’t done any training after the school x-country and there were about 40 to 60 people in each race. Jarrod came 2nd for the year 7 boys, Jade came 27th for the year 7 girls, and Callum came 37th for the year 8 boys.

The year 7 boys came 3rd over all for schools and the year 8 boys came 3rd as well. The race was about 3ks for the year 7s but the year 8s ran 3 and a half ks.

When we went to do the walk around the track it was all muddy and wet. When we all started I slipped over on the first corner and then I lost the lead but I got back up again and started to pace myself then slowly build up to second place on the second lap around. Near the end I slipped over again and thought I was going to come about 20th place but got up so fast it was up to me and that guy. I was still coming 2nd at the last 100 meters. It looked like a sprint off. My mum was yelling “run Jarrod run, run ,run” and so were all the people there. I ended up coming 2nd and my parents said I should of came first but he was just a better runner than me what could I do after all that training I did with my sister running up and down all the hills on my Dad’s farm.

Callum came 37th (was keeping 37th the whole time and not letting anyone go past him), he was happy with himself in his race he said to us that it is going to be a lot harder next year because I will be a year 8 and all the people will have trained harder so it will be a lot harder then this year. Jade started off at the back and was passing lots of the people running.
The top 3 people in each race got certificates for their hard work and putting all effort into that race. The order went Year 7 girls Year 7 boys Year 8 girls and last but not least Year 8 boys. We all had a really good day.

Room Ten X-country Recount

On the 7th of August M.I.S. (Morrinsville Intermediate School) had their cross country.
It was a hard run through the farm with all the ups and downs, running though the paddocks and seeing my mum waving at me yelling “run run, Preston is catching up to you”.
On the day my aim was to get in the top 6 so I could qualify for the Inter Intermediate Schools.
Before we started the order went year 7 girls year 7 boys, year 8 girls and last was the year 8 boys. When we did the practices we had to do 3 laps around the Soccer field, Hockey field, Rugby field and cricket pitch. The day was sunny and there were no clouds so it wasn’t about to rain.
After we finally finish the race I came in the top 6. 6th place was Dean, 5th Ryan, 4th Nathan, 3rd jean, 2nd Preston, and 1st Jarrod which is me so it was a successful day.
Our class results (top 10) were:
Yr 7 boys –Jarrod
Yr 7 Girls – Jade
Yr 8 Boys – Callum
Well done to everyone who participated!

Below is a video of the Morrinsville Intermediate school speeches winner. She is a student of Room Ten and we are all very poud of her achievements today in the final. When asked how she felt about delivering her speech she gave a wee smile and simply said "nervous!". We have had class speeches, team speeches (3 classrooms), and final wole school (9 students in final).
It is very difficult to stand in front of a hall full of people and speak with confidence and conviction so, well done. Here is the winning speech in a more informal setting so you can listen ... enjoy.

The start of U.O.I. (Unit of Inquiry) was pretty hard but then I rang Animal Health and I spoke to Anne about methylene blue and nitrate poisoning and she helped me so much. I really enjoyed our U.O.I heaps!!!I Also, I learned that there are more ways to research other than just the internet because people know heaps of things to.

On the 30th of July room 10 played around with the paragraph.

"The house was dark. It was scary there was noises. There was a storm. Lucy could see to beady eyes ahead".
We brianstormed a list of words that were more descriptive eg.... Noises /scampering. We then re wrote the paragraph.

Here are 3 of the paragraphs room 10 has done.

"There were horrible scampering and scurrying sounds coming from the run down old house. Out side there was a colossal storm brewing. Lucy started to see to 2 beady eyes gleaming at her. Dum Dum Dum". By Tyla and Saro.
"The run down old house was pitch when. Lucy entered the house there was horrible scampering and scurrying sounds while the colossal storm was brewing. Lucy saw 2 beady eyes gleaming ahead of her". By Antonia and Jade.

At first this new U.O.I seemed challenging and a bit difficuilt but once information was collected and organised the 3 questions that I gave myself were easier to understand and answer. One of the things I thought extremely useful in my topic was a clear file so that information could be sorted and stored correctly. Jessica.

Welcome Back - it is Term 3 already

Well it is the start of term 3, this year is going very fast!. I hope you have all had a fabulous holiday and rested up for the busy term ahead. We will be carrying on with our Unit of Inquiry on Farming for the next 3 weeks and then onto another very exciting topic. Short stories will surround us in reading and writing and we may even become very skilled orators in the art of storytelling. Statistics has more mean median and mode to learn and the art of graphing. Keep an eye on all the great term 3 websites listed on the right hand column of the blog. Remember to keep challenging yourself and dont fear failure (some of our best ever 'WOW' moments is when we have failed and then later realise clearly how it is done)

TGFU - Class competition has begun.

Each week we have 4 games of basketball over 2 days. We play the different teams. Because we have 5 teams overall we have one team who does not play for a session and they are the ones who referee, keep score and cheer for the other teams. So far it has been a great competition and everyone is working well and cooperating well.

A good idea for all classrooms

This is an idea shared with us by Mrs McDonald at school. She got a doodle art or poster and when students have finished work they are able to come and colour in parts of the picture to help create a class poster. Room Ten has enjoyed this process ... thanks for the idea Mrs McDonald.

X- Country ... it HAS begun!

Definition: Metaphor is when you use two nouns and compare or contrast them to one another. Unlike simile, you don't use "like" or "as" in the comparison.
