Koru Art Designs

Room Ten have begun looking at the Koru (a design based on the fern frond (pitau)). We begun by talking about the Koru, its meaning and how it is part of a fern. Drawing the koru and having free exploration was the next task so we got our our art books and started exploring. We have just been looking at making Koru designs in a small ruled frame as this defines the area and is easier to fill in. Room Ten also looked at and discussed som Koru designs found on the web and used these as motivation and inspiration for their own designs. We will be refining this stage and the looking at using pastel and black dye as the final medium for presentation. If there is anyone else in NZ or around the world who is doing something similar and would like to share designs we would love to hear from you.

  3. I like how you incorporate your culture into your classroom. In my school, the students have very little shared history. We don't have a specific set of cultural identities we can use (except very generic ones). It seems like our students base their shared culture around the popular music on the radio. In effect they don't have the shared history so they have to create their own.

  8. I think that this is very cool how we are learning about maori art in our class. It is a time for us to get creative, by starting off with one kuru and then we start to attach more and more kuru paterns on untill our simple one kuru desighn turns into a huge kuru family.
